The summer of 1986 was the first ever time i came across the recording custom. I was instantly "HOOKED" on the flawless punchy yet crisp sound of the drums.

The gig was "it bites" and bob dalton had this superb set of 9000's which was black they sounded so great from that day on i had to own a set without question.

Today im still a fan of bob and it bites but moreso my love for the recording customs has grown even more. My sets over the years have been "quartz grey" and the beloved "cherrywood".

Yamaha in my mind certainly created a true paradigm here and as recordings of famous artists will testify the yamaha recording custom stands high in drumworld with head held high.

Bravo Yamaha,
d.jepson.

DAVE WECKL'S CHERRY DRUM SET NEW
by: Anonymous

Hi Dave Jepson
My name is Michael Parker; I’m contacting all of you in regards to Dave Weckl’s (original) Yamaha, Recording Custom, Cherry, Birch, 8pc drum set. I wanted to find out if anyone would be interested in the drums. I purchased the drums from Dave Weckl and his drum tech in the early 1990’s at Dave’s N. Hollywood drum studio. The drums have been kept in (Protector Cases) when not in use, and are in perfect/incredible condition.
I know you are aware of the incredible sound that Weckl produced from the drums (some examples).
The Chick Corea Elektric Band – 1986
The Chick Corea Akoustic Band – 1989
Dave Weckl - Back to the basics – 1988
Dave Weckl - The next step - 1990
Dave Weckl - Master Plan – 1990
AND MANY, MANY MORE:
Here are the serial and Model numbers on the drums.
8" Tom / Serial OI-5312 / Model TT-908RC
10" Tom / Serial OP-3452 / Model TT-910RC
12" Tom / Serial NZ-4185 / Model TT-912RF
13" Tom / Serial OH-2279 / Model TT-913RF
15" Tom / Serial OH-2290 / Model TT-915RF
12" Deep Tom / Serial PJ-5733 / Model TT-912RL
22" Base / Serial OK-1628 / Model 922RF
14" X 6.5 Snare Cobalt Blue – Birch/Philippine Mahogany Series 800 / Serial LL-3059 / Model 865C
If you have any questions, or need more information just let me know.

Quartz Grey NEW
by: drwmwr

I also bought (and still have) my Quartz Grey kit after seeing Mr Dalton play many times.

Weckl was in London at the time, demoing for Yamaha on a Cherry Red.

I was won over.

Bought a 22" x 18" from Tom at the London Rock Shop, and gradually built my kit, piece by piece from there.

Tom sizes 8" x 8", 10" x 10", 12" x 10", 14" x 12", 16" x14.

I told Bob that I'd put a kit together in a Dalton/Weckl hybrid configuration and he gave me a row!! Bless 'im. I was only a kid :)

Brilliant times. Kit still going strong.

YAMAHA RECORDING CUSTOM NEW
by: DAVE JEPSON

QUARTZ GREY SEEMS TO ENCAPSULATE THAT PERIOD IN TIME FOR ME WHEN MUSIC WAS SO VERY EXITING AND ASPIRING.THE FACT THAT THEY WERE YAMAHA RECORDING CUSTOMS WAS SO AMAZING TOO.
I WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER THIS ERA BY USING MY DRUMS AS A TIME MACHINE TO THROW ME BACK TO A TIME OF MUSICAL BLISS, TODAY I STILL OWN QUARTZ GREY AND CHERRYWOOD AND WOULD NEVER SELL FOR THIS REASON.
CHERRYWOOD IS CLOSER TO MY HEART FOR THE REASON MY DEAREST DEPARTED WIFE MANDY ALWAYS LOVED THIS COLOUR, SHE ACTUALLY SAID HOW MUCH SHE LOVED THEM AND REMINDED HER OF QUALITY FURNITURE !, WELL MAND THATS TRUE IT FURNISHES ME WITH YOUR SPIRIT AND THE HEARTBEAT OF DRUMMING WHICH WILL NEVER LEAVE MY SIDE.
THEIR IS A SAYING THAT LOVE NEVER DIES AND THIS IS TRUE, JUST LIKE THE DRUMS I HAVE THEY ALSO WILL NEVER DIE A PERFECT MATCH.

quartz grey it bites
by: jebby

i came across these drums from an auction at harvey goldsmiths in london
the 12 13 14 and 18 belonged to bob, i still have the pictures of reich his roadie taking them down that night, i love them so much they mean so much to me and capture so many memories of a great year for music, it will never be the same again damn what a show, damn what a tragedy that the music world is so shallow and fickle.

Yamaha 9000
by: Stuey (Worc's)

your story was so similar to mine that I just had to comment. I saw It Bites at The Humming Bird in Birmingham in 1989, Bob was playing his Quartz grey kit. That year I purchased a 7 shell quartz grey drum set... Brilliant. I now own a 7 shell (although i play it as a 6) cherrywood 9000.
the only addition to the kit is my beloved Pearl copper free float 14 x 5 snare.

great pics by the way.!!
