Good question. For starters, this set has been made from Birch so its got all those attacking and bright sounding characteristics that you'd expect but, Tama have added a twist.
They've used 3 inner plies of Bubinga wood in the shells to spice things up. How? Well, the Bubinga gives the whole set a much deeper sound while still being nice and punchy thanks to the Birch.
The toms are really sweet sounding and sing out loud and proud, while the bass drum sends you back to earth with a bang! I mean it, it's a monster! If you're looking for a set that's chunky, no wait...beefy (that's better), then it's one to consider.
Apart from the killer sound, Tama have stuck a load of pretty features on the set too. You get low-mass lugs, die-cast hoops, and the Star-Cast tom mount system that gets max projection from the toms. There are some nifty air-cushioned floor tom legs as well, so you won't have to worry about chasing it around the stage mid-gig.
On the set i'm reviewing the shell hardware is coloured in a cool looking Black Nickel, but you can choose to have it in chrome if you want. It's just another nice touch that sets this kit apart.
Then, there are the finishes as well. Tama have come up with a few different options including some high-gloss laquers like Red Sparkle Burst and Harvest Dusk Burst.
And there are some cool glitters like Diamond Dust too. They're all quite nice, but I reckon the Dark Desert Burst is the best of the bunch.
If there's one small thing I didn't like about the set is that you don't get a Birch/Bubinga snare included with the shell pack (I didn't when I reviewed it anyway). Still, there are plenty of great snare drums around that you can pick up fairly cheaply.
In this price range, the Tama Starclassic perfomer stands up really well. The price isn't super cheap, but it's not crazy high either. Anyway, enough blabbing, you want to know where sells it cheapest right? Well, here's the cheapest price i've found online, and they'll give you free delivery as well. Nice!
