Tama Starclassic Bubinga vs. DW

by Scott

Tama Starclassic Bubinga Drum Kit

Tama Starclassic Bubinga Drum Kit

I'm in my early 40's and have been drumming for about 10 years. At this stage of life I can afford to splurge on myself and have always had good quality gear.

I had always had it in mind to one day buy a DW Collectors but hadn't found one locally that interested me enough. When I first laid eyes on my 6 piece Tama Starclassic Bubinga limited edition I knew I had found my kit.

These drums are drop dead gorgeous, the nicest I have seen. Mine have the dark wood colour with a band of abalone all the way round each drum, hence the limited edition.

As far as I know there's only 1 other kit like it in Canada. After setting it up and hearing it, I was sold. I traded in my faithfull Yamaha Birch Custom Absolute and haven't regreted a second.

I just dont see a down side to these drums. They may be a little more rock oriented than some, but that's what i'm about. Tama may not have the sexyness of DW, but they're every bit as good.

I got that right
by: William

I still have my Birch Absolute kit but this does have better tone. I've had 5 pearl reference kits but sold them along the way with no regrets. I've never owned a DW kit but the ones I've played at Guitar Center do not sound as good as these. I had a Tama B & B kit but was not that impressed. The bass drum sounded excellent but that was about it. The smaller toms left me flat. I had a Tama Performer at the same time and side by side the Performer and B & B 10 and 12 inch toms sounded the same.. which is not worth having. I sold both kits as part of my down payment on an 8 piece bubinga elite. Thanks for your post
