The Rock Drumming System DVD course is a full program to learn to play rock drums like a pro.
When it arrived there were 4 DVDs and 4 instructional books all packed with great, fun lessons to go through.
There was also a play-a-long CD too that I really liked! But, let's take a closer a look at this DVD course...
The system was been put together by Jared Falk who is private drum instructor. He has been playing for years and years all over the world, and has taught countless private students how to play drums, so he knows his stuff!
His course is split into four main sections to take you from novice to pro standard - beginner, intermediate, advanced, and lastly the play-a-long section.
After I got the DVD and books I started with the beginner section. This covers some of the basics you need to know like drum tuning, setting up your kit, holding the sticks, note values, some patterns, bass drum and hi-hat technique. It's a good start as it's not TOO overwhelming and was enjoyable. The book was great and there are some good patterns you can learn and use quite quickly.
After, playing through that section and building some skills, I hit the intermediate section. This is a little more demanding but after the beginner section I felt ready for it. In the intermediate section you'll find more complex beats, fills, solos, more detailed info about notes, off-beat patterns (loved these!), and some different time signatures as well. It's a more challenging workout but really improved my drumming.
Next, is the advanced section. You shouldn't jump to this as it's killer! In a good way of course :-). Here you'll find broken hi-hat patterns, sixteenth note triplets, linear drumming (multi-limbs), some very cool fills, more advanced time signatures, and more. This was a freekin' super workout and once i'd been through this section I was giving Mike Portnoy a run for his money! My drumming was starting to be totally bad-ass after this!
One of my favourite parts of the course is the play-a-long DVD and book. There are 10 songs to play and you get tracks with and without drums so you can learn the song then play the drum part yourself. I thought this was one of the most fun parts of the course
So, the big question...is the Rock System any good? Will it turn you into a rock drumming power house? Well, if you follow the lessons and practice regularly then i'm in NO DOUBT that you'll be a kick-ass rock drummer using this course.
The beginner, intermediate, and advanced sections make sure you're always learning things in the right order, and not getting frustrated by learning something too difficult for you yet.
I like the multi camera angles, and that you can play the DVDs in slow motion too. You really can see EVERYTHING that is happening so you can replicate it yourself and fine tune your technique. I thought seeing the bass drum technique was excellent as you wouldn't get to see this from just watching a drummer play normally at a gig or even a drum teacher.
The Rock Drumming System is pretty comprhensive too. There is A LOT of info and lessons to get through, but don't let it scare you. It's a good thing that there is so much to learn, better then the course being to short right?
After working through the system for a few months I can't even begin to tell you how much I have improved! My band have been saying how much better I am and how great we are sounding now. I took my time, enjoyed playing and soaked up everything I could learn from this course. If you do the same, I almost certain you'll get much better.
I'd say that this is the best Rock Drumming course I have bought, and i've have tried a couple of others that didn't come close.
The free bonuses you get on the 'one handed roll', 'drummer essentials', and 'drum kit lessons' were good too. The one handed roll is awsome to show off with but i'm still learning that at the moment. Oh yeah, you get unlimited free customer support as well if you need any help or have any questions.
I'll quickly mention that I took the plunge and bought this as they have a 90-day money back guarantee, but I didn't need it. Once I started watching the first DVD I knew it was all good.
Any downsides? Well, I didn't think the system DVD course wasn't exactly cheap, but compared to spending money on lessons from a teacher, I thought it was very good value. A download isn't available, meaning that depending on where you are located in the world, the DVD may take a little time to arrive, it's totally worth the wait though!
What about the price? Like I mentioned above, the price seems high, but I did like all the lessons and exercises so I thought it was worth it, plus you can pay in installments if you prefer. Where's the cheapest place to buy? Here's the cheapest place i've found. They have the lowest price, so I recommend checking them out for the best deal!
The final word: the Rock Drumming System offers a simple step-by-step way to learn to play drums from beginner to advanced, it covers virtually everything you'd need to know, and is far cheaper than paying for drum lessons. With the great free bonuses as well...I loved this course!
