My Love of Buddy Rich's Stage Presence

I remember back when my bedtime may have been 8 or so, but whenever Buddy Rich was to appear on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, my parents would let me stay up and watch Buddy play.

It was always a treat to watch people in the audience gasp and applaud at what this guy could do on those drums.

Later in my life, I found a book in the library that spoke in more detail about Buddy's life and career. He may have been ill-tempered to a degree but the way I see it, he was a driven professional who demanded professionals playing with him - I never believed that he jumped on anyone who didn't deserve it.

Also, I read that Buddy would play practical jokes on people once in a while. I will close this page by saying that I wish Johnny Carson would have announced Buddy's appearance on his show just once by saying, "Well...here he is folks, and remember - he may not be handsome, Buddy Rich!"
