Excellent Performer Regardless of Cost
by Big Al
I've recently picked up a Vision VBL-984 Bop 4 pc shell pack (12, 14, 14, 18) and it's really a lot of fun to play, The 100% Birch shells are really responsive and they offer a nice balance of power and tone.
Although, the standard coated heads were fine, I put on Remo Ambassador Clears, to the Toms to round out the sound, which is now open and deep. Very nice. The bass drum batter head sounds a little papery so I replaced it with an Aquarian Super Kick II.
On the snare, I wanted a little more control and focus so I put on a Remo Controlled Sound Coated. Man, this snare plays loud or quiet. Very nice sensitivity. The snare throw off mechanism is of fine quality as well. It's smooth and quiet to operate.
With it's stock heads, the shells has a nice vintage jazz sound (Very wide open sound, with lots of overtones, but, not wildly out of control). The sound reminds me of a Gretsch Bop kit I had many years old, but, much better built and better sound.
However, playing in a jazz quintet, that features multiple genres, I needed a sound that offers a little more flexibility, which is why I replaced the batter heads. I'm very happy with this kit.
I don't feel hemmed in when I play. Nice open sound that clearly projects out. It's small, light (compared to my other kit-Master Custom), very well made with excellent shell hardware. It exudes quality.
If you need something that sounds great, easy to transport, and quick to setup and take down, and doesn't take up a lot of stage space, which at times can be a challenge, then take a serious
look at this kit. I highly recommend it.
