Check It Out - Barriemore Barlow!

Barriemore Barlow

Barriemore Barlow

10) Bill Bruford: Unbeatable feel for the tom-toms, speed and groove master.

9) Terry Bozzio: Frank Zappa always had the best available drummers, TB was the best of 'em.

8) Carl Palmer: Lightning fast, but not powerful enough to crack the top 5, sorry Carl!

7) Ringo Starr: The Beatles would not have been The Beatles without him, 'nuff said!

6) Keith Moon: The wildman drummer for The Who didn't have enough power to go along with all the speed and feel to crack the top 5, better than Carl Palmer by miles and miles and miles.

5) Simon Wright: What is AC/DC's drummer doing here? Well, this guy could knock down a house with his HEAVINESS!!! Angus doesn't settle for guys who ain't got the mettle!

4) Neil Peart: I think he is over-rated, but he still out guns all the 'new' guys off the stage!

3) Ian Paice: Deep Purple was one of the few bands that this guy could not run away from on-stage, Blackmore and Glover could keep up with him, UNTIL Blackmore left.

2) John Bonham: When The Levee Breaks, Nobody's Fault But Mine, In My Time Of Dying, Misty Mountain Hop, and MOBY DICK, need I say more? Listen to any Zeppelin record and the deal is sealed. This man just could not be replaced in the HEAVIEST BAND OF ALL-TIME! He just couldn't be!

1) Barriemore Barlow: The MAN who gets the nod as #1 in my book. I have seen everyone on this list except Gene Krupa, and this MAN was the only guy I ever saw who played a better solo than John Bonham.

Unbelievably fast, HEAVY and soooo under-rated that most people do not even know who he is or what band he was famous for being in (Jethro Tull). One band he isn't so famous for is Jimmy Page and the Outrider Crew.

Yes folks when Jason Bonham couldn't play the part of a few songs on "OUTRIDER" ("Liquid Mercury", "The Only One"), Page brought in Barriemore Barlow and re-enforced my opinion that I had had for about 10 yrs.

Since I had seen both Bonham and Barlow in the course of 5 yrs (1975-1980) and saw them both do multiple performances: CONGRATULATIONS MR.BARLOWE!

Barrie Barlow the Best! NEW
by: Rocky vannucci

Barrie played so authentically different than anyone else. Must have seen him 10 times with Tull and always amazed with his creativity.
Listen to Tull's Passion Play & focus on drums throughout the whole song. By the end of album you'll be searching for everything Barrie ever played.

Barlowe nr 1 NEW
by: Janne Stenborg

I can only say that of all drummer I have seen and heard in my long life, Barriemore Barlow is the one that made the strongest impression. I can not count how many Tull-conserts I have seen, but I know that BB always stunned me. He never missed a milli- second and always surprised you with some extra trix that you never expected, even though you knew the songs by heart. Ringo was the man who made me pick up the sticks and Barriemore was the drummer I hoped to be. Obviously the barre (!) was too high! :)

tied for #1 Barlow & Pert for old school NEW
by: Anonymous

I saw Barlow with Tull in 76 in Long Beach CA and WOW he was /is a percussionist not just a drummer this is coming from a guy who loves J B's originality.

B B is totally under rated by the average rock masses and not well known but hugely respected amongst His peers.

Pert is also one of those guys who is fully fleshed out who can play on any kit with any band in any musical style.

Its tuff man Carl Palmer is right up there in the older guys who can swing jazz, improv then pound rock

Oh and don't forget Steve Smith, not because he lives near me ( He does ) but because he is so dam smooth and versatile.

I just dig drummers who are real pro's who have that 'gift' who can play and adapt on the fly.....cheers.

Barry Was A MONSTER!! NEW
by: Kenny Vaughn

Sitting in the fifth row at Barton Coliseum in 1973 for a Tull concert and was totally blown away by Mr. Barlow! I've seen a ton of drummers in my life some of my favorites are Rich, Dunbar and Aldridge but cannot say anyone has had the same effect Barriemore had on me that night. He is most definitely extremely high on the list of all time greats in my book!! Have enjoyed watching several new guys over the past couple of decades too like Jo Jo Mayer, Gavin Harrison and Tony Royster Jr.
A ton of talented players in the world for sure!

Barlow the Master!! NEW
by: Vec Russo

Growing up I was completely energized, perplexed and fascinated by the masterful playing of Mr. Barlow. Just listen to Thick as a Brick through Stormwatch by Jethro Tull...as a drummer I found myself totally in awe of what was going on. His phrasing, his ability to be part of the music and not just part of the rhythm section, his mastery of odd time signatures and his amazing ability to surprise you within every phrase of the music. To me all other drummers were far behind Mr. Barlow...ok I'm not stupid, there were a so many amazing, talented and unique drummers from that era...but to me, no one did it like Mr. Barlow. As far as I'm concerned Tull was never the same post Barlow...this is not a knock on Doane Perry (the longest lasting post Barlow drummer), he just didn't captivate me the same way. Anyway, I wish Mr. Barlow continued his contributions in the prog world. Till this day, I am still astounded by Barlow; I find myself trying to emulate him in the music I play...somehow, it never sounds like him!!

Barrie NEW

I saw Barriemore Barlow play for the first time in 1976 With Jethro Tull. To this day I still remember how smooth he played. Even at a fast tempo, he was smooth and powerful. The best rock drummer I have ever seen.

I agree Barlow was incredible, Thick As A Brick, Passion Play some of the best progressive rock drumming ever.Tull wasn't the same when he left. I would put Piert second though, what no Phil Collins?
