Busting the Best Drummer Myth

by meman1
(philadelphia pa.)

John Bonham

John Bonham

Bonham always was and always will be number one, and any drummer would agree to that even mr. overrated neil pert would agree.

It cracks me up when peart gets number one in almost every magazine poll, rolling stone magazine etc, etc.

I play drums and love rock music. I ask friends who's the best drummer and nine out of ten say neil pert. Yhen i ask have you ever seen him play? The answer is no.

Then i ask why is he so great? Their answer, well he has to be the best look at all the drums he has, he is surrounded by them. That's usually the mentality out there, the more you have the better you are. What a joke.

Peart is good but not the best not even top ten, bonham did way more with way less. I've seen neil peart play he sounds so weak like playing tin cans, bonham sounded like bombs going off and had incredible feel and groove.

Excellent list.....particularly the top spot. John Bonham, a full 36 years after his horrible death at age 32, remains the greatest rock drummer that ever lived.

Obviously my comment attarcted attention. Ok. make lists if you must, however, this is no coversation. There is no criteria, what is the point of 'Busting the best drummer Myth'.
I have being playing, teaching, recording, involved in years of live performance since starting in 1974. I hope I qualify when it comes to opinion. The bass players comment about identifying criteria is spot on. Then what...

by: Blit420

Yeah..this is where I sit back and wait for people who have never walked on a stage, recording studio..backing an artist or band with or without a record deal..famous or not, to tell me how stupid or ignorant I am about music. I love this part. The Internet has become a balls out, hate filled, in your face place. My post is attituded out but not hateful nor am I getting "too" personal. The interest has degraded to a place where "you're a dumb ass moron" is the most popular reply.. To get the jump-I have a BA in music, post graduate in recording technology-(adjunct professor) and a teaching degree. I've been working in music for 3 decades.. My best friend is a household name.. So..SO! I'm not a dumb ass moron.. Yeah, like I said, I wanted to get the jump on the bashing..

the eternal question...sadly NEW
by: Blit420

Really? This is where we are in the world? Really? In all of rock..-all the successful players and all of the influences and this discussion is where the (supposedly above average) musical minds are today? Really..? First I hate lists like this..the instrument, approach and style are too different to put a "best" on players with such broad style differences across the board. ....Ahhmm..there has to be a real player or two on this site. Reading this makes me either want to laugh or cry. So in 2015 with everything that has come and gone, all the great drummers in rock music and it never fails.. There's this constant "drumbeat" about Neil Peart holding this title of "best rock drummer." I'm almost 50, I'm a musician, engineer and producer by trade. I've been cutting records since Aug. 10th 1987. I cut my first "first call" big session for Randy Travis..so I've been doing this for a long time.. I've been on 40 something top 10s and 16 number 1's as a bass man. I say all that to give you a reference point. In this debate, to reach an answer or just to reach an end to the argument, one would need to know what criteria are looking at to reach your opinion. Mine is an over-all view point where the unique sound a great player makes, the feel and touch and power with chops..AND "how bright their legend is"..and why. Let me just get this out of my throat..these two guys where/are not the greatest rock drummers (ever!) in history..no way, not even close. But for the sake of rock music, culture and misguided young fans I'll make my opinion while making my point. It should be obvious who is the more dominant figure and more important figure.. But lets talk about the area of the argument, who is "the best" in terms of (how you people look at it) how fast, how much flash and just the general ability to make grammar school kids giggle. Neil's ability to play quads and flash evenly and impressively is well known so there are people here that will never give in to the idea the Neil isn't the greatest &@#%damn rock & roll drummer of awwlll tiiimme! But the fact is..between those two, John not only is the better drummer..his aggressive, completely iconic style influenced so many drummers. You can hear his influence throughout rock music-what's left of it.. John is to the drums what Jimi Hendrix was to the guitar.. John showed us how to feel rock.. His massive room-miked huge sounds were so innovative. He's the reason drums sound the way they do in rock today.. So, when someone comes into the industry and changes the culture of or the nature of "how rock drums will sound" and draw us out a map or blueprint of how drums will sound "because that's John's sound" and now will be the archetype of the "canon snare"...huge rock tone. Huge room miked "this is rock drums!" sound belongs to John Bonham! He did it first.. Stamped it down hard with a sound so unique that it virtually "branded" Led Zep.. And people talk about the first time they heard John Bonham the same way the do about the first time they heard Jimi Hendrix or (for a younger gen.) Eddy Van Halen.. Bonham did all that for rock drums..so, of freakin course John Bonham gets props over and above Neil Peart. It has very little to do with his BPM power or his flash ability when it comes to this.. Even Keith Moon will be and should be placed above Neil. It doesn't really matter that as a bass player I'd probably be found hanging from a shower head after a few years of dragging Keith up and down the pocket-(that be cannot find)..but he's Keith freakin Moon.. I can already hear the screams, "he's Neil freakin Peart!" Yeah, but as big as Rush got there still is an amount of.."yeah but it's Rush..so who cares!" ..kind of feeling out here. You have to have a taste for Rush. Great band, but very complex and less melodic..not my thing. That doesn't mean I biased against Neil..it's just that there is an absolute answer to this question-Bonham v. Peart.. John is a much more important figure and absolutely iconic. John Bonham is an icon where he and his legend make him a rock drummer of much heavier gravity than Neil Peart.

John Bonham is my favorite drummer. I also like Ginger Baker, Bill Ward (Black Sabbath) and Ian Paice (Deep Purple). Notice a trend? I think we are dealing with two distinct drummers playing very genre specific music. Neil Peart is excellent, but I just don't care for Rush so he doesn't get my vote for #1. There really is very little in common between Bonham and Peart so I think a comparison is difficult.

Bonham better than Peart? NEW
by: Pratt

Total bullshit if you think Bonham is better than Peart! He was a good drummer, not taking that away from him, but to compare him to Neil is like comparing a Chev to a Ferrari! There are/were better drummers than Bonham that finished under Bonham's #2 spot... Keith Moon and Ginger Baker are good examples. If any drummer compares to Neil on this list, it is Moon, Neil's idol!

You all have no idea what you are talking about, and prove what is exactly wrong with rock music these days NEW
by: Anonymous

Not a single person here understands bonham's playing.

Wow. Nevermind all the innovativeness. The fact that he had an insane right foot, and that he basically created modern rock drumming.

Technical ability, sure, not the greatest. Neil could do things John couldn't. But to say that Bonham's technical ability wasn't significantly better than any average pro, is just ignorant.

Peart could play a solo, and had all his licks, and independence. Neil's a fantastic drummer. But that's not the point. You guys are all looking at technical skill, as if it's the defining feature of a rock drummer.

I don't care how technically skilled you are, if your beat doesn't compliment the song, and make the rest of the band sound better, you are not a good drummer. Period. It's about the unit.

Bonham could swing a rock beat. Bonham had such a musical mind, and he could come up with the perfect beat for the song. He knew how to tune the drums, and he knew how to strike them to get the best sound out of each drum. He knew how to make a groove compliment the bass guitar, guitar, and every other instrument better than everyone. He had a connection to rhythm unlike anyone else.

If anyone here truely thinks neil swings better than bonham, or that Neil can groove harder than Bonham, then I I don't know what to tell ya.

Bonham wasn't technically the best

But look at what we got here...
-Innovativeness
-his unrivaled Feel and groove
- His striking ability
-ability to complement the song
-his massive sound
-power and groove, everything with groove

Bonham isn't technically the best, but together, all his qualities gave us the most mammoth presence drums have ever had in rock music. The quintessential drumming with such an impact on his music.

These are the qualities that made bonham the best.

Realistically, I've gone through my keith moon phase, BOY did I go through my Peart phase. And I went through my bonham phase, then I went through my own phase of obsessing over myself. I studied Neil. Neil was the best. Hated Bonham, because I refused to accept it...but after accepting it, and studying bonham's playing, all his qualities.

There is not a single drummer in the history of rock music who can hold a candle to John Bonham.

That is a plain and simple fact. It's about music, not skill.

Numero uno? No doubt in my mind, Neil. NEW
by: Martin

Bonham was an excellent power drummer. BUT Neil Peart has the complete range. Power in abundance (to say otherwise is a preposterous insult to anyone who listens to Rock let alone to Neil). Someone here needs to invest in a decent hi fi system , or better still go see Rush live.Varied styles, brilliant fills (listen to for example "Where's My Thing" from the Roll the Bones album. Intricate time change required? A snip for Neil and Bill Bruford but not I think for Bonzo. Don't get me wrong I love Bonzo's attack and pace but he wasn't the complete package. Sadly we no longer have Bonzo but we still have his legacy.

I agree with meman1 NEW
by: Postmaster

meman1 was spot on about Bonham. Most people who claim that Peart is the best have never played drums or are beginners. Peart is flashy and fast. What good drummer wouldn't sound incredible behind a 20 piece set? Playing fast does not make someone a great drummer. If Bonham were still alive we wouldn't be having this conversation.

by: Anonymous

You are just an ignorant asshole.... John could not even hold neils jock strap... You call yourself a drummer and say not only is neil not the best drummer but not even in the top 10... No body says he is the best because the amount of drums he has, it is because the shit he does cant even be done by any body else.... Your only saying that because you sit at home and play Zep crap songs on your drums and you are pissed because rush songs are too hard to play. He is the greatest drummer because he can do shit that no one else can do... Get a life!!!

Pounding is All? NEW
by: Anonymous

No doubt Bonham was a great drummer. But pounding isn't all there is. Time changes, limb independence, creativity, timing all require much more than pounding. Neil Peart weak??? Give me a break. While the band took a break, Neil continued to play solo. Tom Sawyer weak???? The only people I ever heard use Peart's drum kit as a reason for his greatness are non-drummers. I've found many drummers rate their favorite by the level the drummer can play. Bonham did great, heavy, steady beats, but no way he could keep up with Peart. That is why pros name Peart as the best drummer, not because he has a big set.
